As always, the purpose of sharing these Zem’s Recs is to pass on the information and sounds that have influenced and inspired my artistry. May that inspiration pass on to you.
Here are some gems from one of Africa’s many music hubs.
Ghana in the 70s saw the rise of a new vibe called Ghana funk a bridge between highlife, Afrobeat, and stretching into disco. Influenced by the great African American Funk artists like James Brown and George Clinton, these Ghanaian artists added their own unique flavor to this sound.
Historically this sound came during Ghana's post-independence era. And beyond the spiritual and physical release this music provided, some artists would very subtly allude to the political and social revolution happening at the time. The music always stretches far beyond the dance floor.
